A journey in time with Alzheimer's

Sometimes Not

Who is he … looking at me
Hugged me … wearing a grin
Should I smile … look away
Seems he thinks … I know him
You do Mom … your son-in-law
You’ve know … many years
Sometimes … you remember
Sometimes not … my tears!

I think Mother’s eyesight is amiss. I’ve read articles that say the Alzheimer’s person has narrowing vision. I’ve also noticed she grimaces when many voices are around (public places). She’s good at covering up, seeming to understand something when she doesn’t. I just take things as they come. This Momma needs much attention on outings!

Clemency

Seriously? … reclined!
Sleeping? … at this time!
Surely not … I call your name
Napping … boredom’s game
Evidently … meandering … late
Nurses … smile … corroborate
Long time night owl … history
Must sleep sometime … necessity
Have to give you … clemency
Or …  Lady Blue  visits … ultimately!

Acquaintances

Intermittent … smiles … cheery nods … hello
Memories … bethink … from long ago
Lost time … in your mind … conceived
A look … or act … binds … familiarity
Acquaintances … query … we met … before?
Mind’s eye… embraces … helpful conspirator
Pleasurable … everyone‘s … smiley ‘n happy
Reality check … gibberish … represses getting sappy!

Appeasing Momma

Peek in … throw hat in the door
Are you there Momma? Is it war!
She forgets when I come around
Where have you been? She says
Wearing … a … frown!
Always I say … working
It seems … to appease her mind
Sometimes … I am
Sometimes … not
A fib-let … helps me be kind
No matter how long I stay
She’s unhappy when I go away
But Momma … I’ll see you
Tomorrow … no fear
Frown’s gone … smiles appear!

Loving Momma

Working on a quilt … diligently
A lady … Mom’s friend … smiles at me
Flattening a blanket … on a table
Quilting she did … when she was able
Carefully … fervently … moves around
No more wrinkles … can be found
Over and over … again and again
Around that table … comes the friend
Mom … says … she’s  a busy one
Something to do … when no one comes
She looks into my eyes …  says … Sis
Thanks … for spending … time with me
Fighting back tears … I hug her tight
It’s me … who’s lucky …  love you
Momma … with all … my might!

Holding the Fort

Kaleidoscope … auras … all colors ‘n hues
Kindness ‘n smiles … chase away … Lady Blues
Dark colors suppressed … it’s now … Lucy’s day
Enjoying … sunshine … bright colors … display
A whisper in time … Blue gives … a non smile
Bright colors fade … Lady Blue … beguiles
Challenging … times … needless to say
Holding the fort … while Lucy’s … away.

Unlock Misery

Lucid Lucy … positive you … happier thoughts … no hindsight blues
Can’t erase … can’t undo … eyes forward … smiles ensue
Lady Blue … opposite way … morbid thoughts … thru the day
Worries … frets ‘n stews … feeds … sad … Lady Blue
Patience wane … frustration grows … escalation … caregiver woes
Distractions failed … where’s the key … unlock Blue’s … misery
Wait … protect … no confrontation … acts of kindness in succession
Sometimes sleep … scares her away … awakens … Lucy … hooray!

Gotcha

Unrest … every day … burdens stay
Helplessness … frightens … you
Obsessing thoughts … Lady Blue
Weakness … draining … sad adieu
Unsteady gait … overcoming you
Suspicious nature blocks your view
Lost time … can’t unwind … pause
Sparkling eyes … sometimes a smile
Thoughtfulness stays … awhile
Love the sunshine, … yes you do
Gotcha Mother! … I see you!

Pondering With Sheila K

Heavens’ windows … open wide
Observing … us … below
Wonder … they proud of us?
Someday … we’ll know!
Did I help … my neighbor?
Was kindness … bestowed?
Was kindness … received?
Are we stuck … did we grow?
Pondering … the question
You smile … there’s always time
To help … another … brother
Be … ye … ever … kind.

Crocodile Stew

A … crocodile … ate … me?
You’re serious … I can see
Tears streaming down your face
Short term memory … please erase
I missed a visit … yesterday
It happens … now … and then
When it does … you’re in a stew
Wandering … Alzheimer’s … avenue
What to do … perplexes … me
No other course … I see
Hugs … smiles … extra … miles
Bring on the chocolate … to beguile.
