A journey in time with Alzheimer's

Bona fide

Leaning … peering to the floor
Deja vu … been here … before
An abyss … porthole … looking thru
Finding another? … Peering at you?
You’re talking loud … on a quest
Totally … enthralled … I can attest
Friend or foe … my mind’s screaming
Tears flowing … floods … streaming
A serious … depressing frown
Your mind’s … in … confusion
World‘s … upside … down!
Times like this … head says run
Heart says stay … till over … done
Sometimes lasts … a moment or two
Sometimes … more … past curfew
Poor Momma … my heart cries
Alzheimer’s stinks … bona fide!

Innocence kept safe

Dilemma … keeping … Mother … safe
From … who … what … you say
From others … going her way
From strangers … sharing her lot
Alzheimer’s forget-me-nots
Fragile minds … flowers … askew
Sanity’s train … way overdue
From … herself … oops
Fell … off balance … to the floor
Which direction … to her door
Suspicious … fearful … scared
Where’d they put her stuff?
Short term memory gone … enough!
Makes a sane person … nuts
Thinking stuff … stole away
Looking for it … every day
Here … now there … or was it?
Who … keeps Mother … safe?
When … I’m not … around
Caregivers … defend her ground
Child like innocence … abounds
Alert … listening … every sound
Something’s wrong … in hot pursue
Troublous forget-me-nots … taboo.

Inoculation

Found you shuffling down the hall
You see me … “Sheila Grimes” you call
They’re mean … needles aimed at me
You say … alarmed … profanity
Goodness Mother … tell me all
In my mind … words … recall
Flu season … time … inoculate
You forgot … my articulate
We talked of what needed done
Agreed … from … everyone
So now … anger in your eyes
You forgot … not surprised
Short-term memory … surmised
Talk it out … my head is thinking
Holding tears … my eyes are blinking
Sweet angels … nurses … got it done
Heartfelt thanks … everyone!

Remembering Cousins

Mother said … once upon a time
Many years … hard … to remember
In this brain of mine … I had cousins
Harry, Charlie, Alfred, Ralph and Barbara too!
I remember as plain as day … when … no school
To the boardwalk … we’d play … a rule
Aunt Lil … my Aunt … their mum
I remember … not all … but some
Looking through time … they’re smiling at me
Love to chat … time away … laugh ‘n play
If they had time … and … came my way.

Serendipity

Of new babies … Mom wound say
A piece of humanity … born today
Many kids … cared for … plus me
Housewife … mother … serendipity
Surely … there were hills to climb
Surely… time passed … too fast
Unselfish ways … your fate
Unkindness always had to wait
Always … said a prayer for me
Unpleasantness ‘n fear … did flee
And I for her … my whole life thru
Since leaving home … a long adieu
My heart … kept … running … back
Never … could I tarry … long
I grew stronger … years went by
Less time spent … asking why
Life catches you … by the hand
Throws you out … when unplanned
But thank you Jesus … right on time
Thru tears and grief … perfect … prime
I get to spend … time with Mother
A blessing for me … like no other!

Blue Rules (TOMORROW SEPT. 20, 2014 IS THE WALK TO END ALZHEIMER’S DAY! ) AFTER ALL THIS TIME WITH MOTHER – BLUE DEFINITELY RULES HER MIND – BUT NOT HER HEART!

Sheila Grimes … yelled to me
You’re angry … how could that be
I just walked in … started talking
A kind nurse … you are stalking
They’re bad ’n mean … you say
Obviously … not … a good day
Sundowners … in the way
So … I’m hanging out … with you
Coaxing food … medication overdue
Lady Blue… rules … the day
Lucid Lucy … ran … away.

Crooked Line

Mother asks … a question
Heavens… Open wide
Observing us … below
Wonder … proud of us?
No way … to know!
Did I help my neighbor
Was kindness bestowed
Was kindness received
Are we stuck … did we grow
Pondering … the question
If you’re asking … you’ve the time
To help another brother
Keep off the crooked line.

Safe Nest

Birds flying … gathering  … twigs ‘n leaves
Nesting  … soft … mother’s embrace
Tirelessly … daily … flutter … to make
A  safe place … you miss your safe place
You … nestled ‘n gave … a Mother’s … embrace
I get it … I do … memories  faded … gone
You ponder and stew … wanting to know … why
Where’d everything … go? Memories … askew
Can’t put them together … for you.

Laceration Day

I’m up …can’t sleep …phone rings ….Mom fell …repeat
Ambulance on the way … a voice …calmly relays
Rushing to dress … mind’s racing … ahead …enough said
Oops … shoes and socks …boots?   Overcast … dreary  today!
Sheila Mariekeep it together …Dad would say …rainy weather
Funny thoughts through my head …he’s been long ago …dead!
Nostalgia?  Seriously?  Now?  Today? Mind’s in …disarray!
Looking down at her pale face …Hi Honey my thoughts  embrace
That you Sis? Yep, here I am … definitely … meeting unplanned
Following  ambulance was a joke … fantasy mind stoked
Need wings …fly thru the air …  focus … yellow lines … stare
Forty miles … think ’n stew …  what’s happening to you
Counting raindrops on the glass …speeding … really fast
Praying … Lord … me and you …always …you see me through
In emergency … keeping you in bed …  me … an aching head
Short term memory … rules the day … logic runs away
X-rays …  labs … cleared… yeah  … you dodged  … a bullet today
Numbing medicine … injected  … laceration closed … enough said
After released  and driving away   … “I’m hungry”  you say
Milkshake in hand, cookie the other … you’re smiling …  Mother!

Mom’s laceration on the back of her head is healing nicely.  This poem has been hanging around since then, time to let it go!

Wearing Compassion

Little tyke’s sleeping …you say …rocking beside her bed
She needs me to stay …while she pillows her head
No one will watch  …she could roll to the floor
You say …suspiciously looking …towards the door
I  definitely know you’re a  friend
This lady (tyke) … safe in your care, days on end
She smiles, you smile, not really knowing
Which direction …or time …each other is going
But none the less …caring is sharing
Mother …compassion you’re wearing!
