A journey in time with Alzheimer's

A guiding star

Happier than you’ve ever been
Heavenly days, with Jesus your friend
Many people, you led His way
It’s all in your … resume’
Many hearts, happiness abounds
Because you shone His light around
Earth is a sweeter place … by far
Because you were … a guiding star!

Smiley face

Morning madness … be gone
Sad countenance … move on
Smiley face … chase blues away
Spirits lifted …  thru the day
No matter how or why blue
Attitudes …  choices
Made by … you.

When I think of my Mother, it’s her smiley face I miss most of all.

A week later

You’ve been gone to heaven a week
I get so emotional … hard to speak
My head gets dizzy … missing you
My heart knows … you’re not blue
No more Alzheimer’s … no sad days
No more wanting to … run away
Only peace … tranquility
In my mind’s eye … I see
You’re strolling heaven … happily
Seeing Jesus … face to face
In His loving arms … embrace
Visiting friends/family and more
So much peace and love … in store
I’ll be o.k. … this time and place
Knowing someday … by God’s grace
His promise … I’ll see Him
(And you too) … face to face.

No matter what

Angel dust … falls from high
Soothing tired … misty eyes
Wonders great … wonders … small
Wondering how I cope … at all
Some days … my heart’s … heavy
Missing you … Alzheimer’s stew
Other days … light as a feather
God’s grace … firm tether
Some days … need … refreshing
Other days … can’t … unglue
Some days … miss other … Mother
Other days … take a hike … you
Some days … weary … b.l.o.w.
Other days … extra miles … g.o.
Some days … need a break
Other days … hurry I’m late
No matter what … the clue
I’m blessed … because of you.

Tight hold

Holding … fast … what makes sense
I get it … living … this side of the fence
Few moments … you’re not sad or blue
Wanting to leave … seek out … you
Long ago places … people … you knew
Whispers of time … flee Alzheimer’s stew
Observing … Lucid Lucy … today
Hurry Mother … let’s run and play
But then … we get … to the … fence
You struggle … confused … no sense
I’m yelling … come Mother … away
But … atlas … you can’t … you stay
Grasp of Lady-blue … like no other
Has a tight hold … my sweet Mother!

Irrelevant

Where is Sis … why not here
She would have told me … so
Mother said … in my … ear
Seems her Doctor … worked with me
In hospital … many years … ago
He mentioned to Mother … but
His words made no sense … so
In her head … bits ‘n pieces glued
Out came … scenario … brewed
She’s persistent … thinks I’m sick
I’m Sheila Grimes … I am OK
Do you need … a resume?
I’m Sis … really … it’s true
She looked at me … irrelevant
Alzheimer’s … stew!

Peace and dignity

I’m free …  letting it go … shoes on backwards
Don’t you know … who cares … not me … I’m cured
You’re clean … comfortable … other details … absurd
Reassessing my priorities … to your changing ways
Has been enlightening … needless to say
My peace of mind … your dignity
What it’s about … most … definitely
So … I’ve grown up … to you dear Mother
I’m throwing … old rules … away
We’re writing … our own … how to do it
Each … and … every … day!

Tranquility

They’re not real … said with a sigh
She acts like they are … they’re not
I played with them too … they don’t talk
But for her … they do … what a plot!
It would seem … a dilemma
Both are in places … unknown
My Mom … enjoys her baby dolls
She protects … plays on her own
She sincerely believes her mission
To care for them … till they’re grown
Another lady … wants to play
But Mother … is stern … says no
They’re not toys … she explains
Fearing … won’t leave them alone
So now … I play … baby dolls
I’m Aunt Sis … she shares with me
The whole time I’m watching her
Slipping … further … away
But these dolls … fill her heart
Ease her mind … tranquility.

I call her ” Momma”

I call her Momma … she doesn’t mind anymore
There was a time she’d say … that’s childish
Take the door … but I am your child
My heart … yearns … for more
Out of soothing thoughts … empty store
Time passes through … yesterdays door
Linked here … to always … forevermore
Hugs through time … dear Mother
A sweetheart … like no other.
