A journey in time with Alzheimer's

Garden memories

Walking through the garden
Mom smiles and lifts her chin
Admiring all the pretty colors
She’s enjoying from within
Always loved her flowers
Even weeds were her delight
Heaven help us if we stomped
Or pulled one in her sight

A dignified life

Tears ago … my heart sank … much to know … to help Mom
Whispers of time … have past … my mission … remains fast
Hope is urgent … constant … hold tight … forceful might
Ever so close … yet not … dear God … my lot
Oh … to toss … the veil … that doubles … each day
I’m fading … exponentially … soon to be gone … away
Remaining memories of me … distant drumming sounds
Soon our only bond … you dear Jesus … our heart’s song
Daily prayer … no worry … no strife … a dignified life.

Sleepy Time

Shrugging kindness … sanity fled
Confusion’s angry … signal misread
Scales tipped … to Lady Blue
Ultimately … sundowner’s … preview
Needs time … pillow her head
Needs space … confusion unwed
Naps … sleepy time’s … through
Momma’s … sweet … face
With smiles … ensue!

Appeasing Momma

Peek in … throw hat in the door
Are you there Momma? Is it war!
She forgets when I come around
Where have you been? She says
Wearing … a … frown!
Always I say … working
It seems … to appease her mind
Sometimes … I am
Sometimes … not
A fib-let … helps me be kind
No matter how long I stay
She’s unhappy when I go away
But Momma … I’ll see you
Tomorrow … no fear
Frown’s gone … smiles appear!

Futility

Suspicion threw her weight … today
Angry ‘n mad … doesn’t want to stay
Wants to go home … where she belongs
Keeping her here … just plain wrong
No way to reason … feels … betrayed
Pondering … way out … and … away
Alzheimer’s veil … lasts for hours
Emotionally pounded … enough said
Locked in her mind … my dread
Nothing works … distracting attention
Every word … brings … apprehension
Finally … kissed her head … adieu
Sorry Mom … I really … miss you
Can’t do this … today … futility
Slowly I leave … e.v.e.n.t.u.a.l.l.y.

Loving Momma

Working on a quilt … diligently
A lady … Mom’s friend … smiles at me
Flattening a blanket … on a table
Quilting she did … when she was able
Carefully … fervently … moves around
No more wrinkles … can be found
Over and over … again and again
Around that table … comes the friend
Mom … says … she’s  a busy one
Something to do … when no one comes
She looks into my eyes …  says … Sis
Thanks … for spending … time with me
Fighting back tears … I hug her tight
It’s me … who’s lucky …  love you
Momma … with all … my might!

Angel Songs

Heartfelt days … watching … Mom ricochet
Down … Alzheimer’s path … light-years away
Can’t find … her way … back … to … now
Can’t deal … with whom … what or how
Can’t remember … names … faces
Memories askew … times … places
Angry … her mind … lets her down
Sad … lonely … frustration … abounds
Comforting … caregivers … around
Compassion’s free … silent … calm
God’s in control … whispering psalms
Ever so softly … into … her ears
Songs by angels … loved ones held dear
You hear that Sis … said with eyes wide open
Nodding in tears … my heart has spoken.

Who R U

I want to run away
From … you
I don’t see my Mom
Who are … you
Why do you look
Like her
You’re wearing
Her clothes
Your voice is
The same
Dear God
Help me … she’s
My … Mom!

Restore Sanity

Wishes … for Mom … instinctively
Hope … is eternal … definitely
Don’t want suffering … her way
Need to send Alz … on holiday
Soon to walk … my blues away
Alz Alliance … don’t … delay
Research … looking … for cure
Close … says so … in literature
So much suffering … all around
Young and old … spell bound
Riding Alz … merry-go-round
Won’t you help … hop … aboard
Give what … you … can afford
Let’s kick Alz … off … the ride
Restore … sanity … bonafide!

Compassion … You

He shuffles  around … head hanging down
No telling thoughts he wears with a frown
No  words …  as you pass in the hall
You’re  concerned … he’s not talking at all
It’s okay Mom, his business, not yours
Must leave him alone … be reassured
He is where he is …  to you it’s absurd
Doesn’t want to be … sad  … you say
As you turn … giving smiles away
You worry ‘n fret … ponder … stew
Compassion …empathy … you.
