A journey in time with Alzheimer's

Treasure on a shelf

Mary doll sits, on top of a shelf
I spy her often, say to myself
You’re a bright spot in my day
You lightened Mom’s load
A treasure … I’d say
Because you were there
She gave smiles away
You filled …  a void
She needed …  to care
You kept her …  from
Deepening … despair.

Always again

Spring is here … again
Birds flying high … again
Bees buzzing … again
Flowers blooming … again
Grass green … again
Blue skies … again
Miss times gone … again
Wondering why … again
In my heart … I know
Your time … to go
Thank you Mom … again
For loving me … always.

Working on #2 book from Alzheimer’s Trail blog.  It’s challenging.  I’m hopeful it’ll be finished in a few weeks.  I need to put all my poems in books to move on.  Thanks for reading.  I am better.

Turvy smile

Twas … long ago … it seems today
When Momma … smiled my blues away
Always … gave … helping … hand
Never … giving others … slam
Soon … Thanksgiving will be … here
Then follows … Christmas … cheer
My favorite … family … times
Without Momma … sadly … find
Need to turn my … turvy smile
Inside out … right side … to you
When lovely ones … read my words
Makes me smile … N O T B L U E!

My head reminds

I remember … yesterday
Wanting to … go away
Dad … said … you can’t
Mom … said … let her go
Always … had my back
Always … saw my heart
Always … knew my way
From … the very start
Gave me … latitude
Gave me … peace of mind
Courage … honor … love
Compassion … for mankind
Her … empathy was striking
Cared for other … souls
Taught me … to be kind
My heart … my head reminds
My memories … rewind
To miss her can’t be wrong
Her time on earth … gone
Mentor … friend … my Momma
I won’t … let her go!

Lost ‘n found

Received a call … Mom’s blue
Dolls … lost … not new
I listen … attentively
Making sense … ultimately
You miss your … kids 1-2-3
Not us … your baby … dolls
Frustrated … you can’t see
Frantically buzzing … busy bee
Wide-eyed … they’re in sight
Can’t move … left or right
Waiting … (shall I say) patiently
For you to see them … directly
Finally, nurse Charla saves the day
Babies found … sweet bouquets!

Framed

I … watch you … stare
Momma … you in there?
I have a need … to know!
Where … did you … go?
Alzheimer’s … no game
Inside … Topsy- turvy
Outside … much the same
Confusion … muddles the brain
Clear notions … come out lame
Slurred words … proclaim
Innocence … framed.

Momma bear

Mirror … mirror on the wall … who’s the image standing tall
Watching over fragile minds … always gentle … always kind
Caring for … vulnerable souls … fidgeting… out of control
Endless walking halls … giving a nudge … when memory stalls
Scrambling to tidy a room … when occupant is moody ‘n gloom
Who matches socks ‘n shoes … ties laces … no I.O.U.’s
Cleans tables … floors … removes debris from corridors
Smiles on a rainy day … comforts … chases blues away
Gives dignity … a helping hand … changes thoughts … no reprimand
Lifts spirits … a warm embrace … compassion … commonplace
Mirror … mirror … you know it’s true … the Alz team’s many not few
My mind rests easy … in their care … my Mom’s a cub … the image:
Momma bear!

Worsening confusion

I hear words … I’ve dreaded so long
Confusion’s worsening … be strong
Watch me Momma … hear my heart
Stay with me … be lucid … restart
Oh … I know … times moving on
Lucid days … fewer … soon gone
I see others … ahead … of you
Sad eyes … moody days … blue
Soon to be … the new … you
We’ll get … through … you’ll see
Or you won’t … you’re leaving me.

Chickadees

Narrow hallways through the place
We wander … in and out
Mom enjoys looking … smiling
When others peek and shout
I don’t see … my chickadees
She says … with a … frown
Guess she’s looking for her room
Two halls down … around
She started out … strong
Eyeing everything … in sight
Now she’s had … enough
Walk’s finished for tonight
Passing through the doors
Leading to … her place
Her face lights up … it’s Mary
She gives a warm … embrace.

Mom’s nursery

Walking into Mom’s room I see
A nursery … Mary, Timotheus and
Who are you?  Mom … who’s the
new kid?  She smiles (babysitting awhile)
Seems (I heard) her adult passed away
Figures … Mom invited her to stay
Through the years, kindness was
Never a weakness … as I recall
Mom … always … gave … all
Her heart always gave what she had
No stumbling blocks … was glad
To help another … along the way
And so it is today … the new kid
Is welcomed … to play!
