A journey in time with Alzheimer's

Simpler times

Watching you care for Mary
You smile … hug her tight
Thinking … years … back
Your mothering … a delight
A comforter … a nurturer
Much love … you did invest
Back to simpler times
Relieves Alzheimer’s stress.

Love of life

Sometimes … I walk away … sad … blue
Tears … falling … I’m missing you
Love to help … in any way … I’m by your side
Miss you most … with you … hurt inside I hide
My fortitude wanes … want so much to share
Alzheimer’s stifles you … I’m totally … aware
On we go … days pass by …. chaos … strife
You give me … strength … through
Your love of life.

Maintaining dignity

Anchoring hope … ties that bind
Clearing paths … tangles unwind
Difficult … keeping distance ‘n care
Intoxicating … abyss … beware
Tormented … sanity … hides away
Light-headed … no reason to stay
Persistent … hope … pushes on
Determined to cope … into the dawn
Joy in the moment … loving embrace
Being needed … encourages haste
No place on earth … better to be
Maintaining … grace ‘n dignity.

What’s the question?

Grumpy … needs told … what … where … don’t scold
Hates … not knowing why … rational thinking … won’t fly
So … what’s … a trick … keep Grumpy … on the stick
Moving forward … onward bound … confusion around
Wait … let it go … short term memory … love it so
Eventually …  circles  … fly by … can’t remember why
What was the question … can’t know … love it … love it
LET … IT … GO!

Steadfast

Clearing thoughts in my head
Let it go … pillow said
Breathe in slow … in … out
Words can hurt … there’s no doubt
Can’t change … where you … are
Or when you feel the need … to spar
Can only promise … not to run
Steadfast … till day is done
Not to … with my sadness … flee
Swallow … hard … sweet misery
Strength and solace … from above
He holds our hands … binds our love
Short term memory … paves the way
Refreshes … sweetly … each new day.

Remembering Cousins

Mother said … once upon a time
Many years … hard … to remember
In this brain of mine … I had cousins
Harry, Charlie, Alfred, Ralph and Barbara too!
I remember as plain as day … when … no school
To the boardwalk … we’d play … a rule
Aunt Lil … my Aunt … their mum
I remember … not all … but some
Looking through time … they’re smiling at me
Love to chat … time away … laugh ‘n play
If they had time … and … came my way.

Serendipity

Of new babies … Mom wound say
A piece of humanity … born today
Many kids … cared for … plus me
Housewife … mother … serendipity
Surely … there were hills to climb
Surely… time passed … too fast
Unselfish ways … your fate
Unkindness always had to wait
Always … said a prayer for me
Unpleasantness ‘n fear … did flee
And I for her … my whole life thru
Since leaving home … a long adieu
My heart … kept … running … back
Never … could I tarry … long
I grew stronger … years went by
Less time spent … asking why
Life catches you … by the hand
Throws you out … when unplanned
But thank you Jesus … right on time
Thru tears and grief … perfect … prime
I get to spend … time with Mother
A blessing for me … like no other!

Loving Momma

Working on a quilt … diligently
A lady … Mom’s friend … smiles at me
Flattening a blanket … on a table
Quilting she did … when she was able
Carefully … fervently … moves around
No more wrinkles … can be found
Over and over … again and again
Around that table … comes the friend
Mom … says … she’s  a busy one
Something to do … when no one comes
She looks into my eyes …  says … Sis
Thanks … for spending … time with me
Fighting back tears … I hug her tight
It’s me … who’s lucky …  love you
Momma … with all … my might!

Angel Songs

Heartfelt days … watching … Mom ricochet
Down … Alzheimer’s path … light-years away
Can’t find … her way … back … to … now
Can’t deal … with whom … what or how
Can’t remember … names … faces
Memories askew … times … places
Angry … her mind … lets her down
Sad … lonely … frustration … abounds
Comforting … caregivers … around
Compassion’s free … silent … calm
God’s in control … whispering psalms
Ever so softly … into … her ears
Songs by angels … loved ones held dear
You hear that Sis … said with eyes wide open
Nodding in tears … my heart has spoken.

Obsolete

Hotter than … my love
Words said … with a smile
The love … of your life
Gone now … awhile
Today … you forgot
What … you knew
Why say … those words
You haven’t … a clue
You stuttered … stammered
Part of the phrase
Then tossed it aside
Down Alzheimer’s maze
My tears wouldn’t stop
My heart skipped a beat
This memory … so precious
Is now … obsolete!
