The Star Spangled Banner Lyrics
By Francis Scott Key 1814

Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
‘Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Mother loves the United States of America.  When I told her the 4th of July was here, she said, “what are we gonna do?”
I hope it’s cool enough in Texas for fireworks. Homemade ice cream for sure!

Some of the most beautiful words even penned. Happy Independence Day! ~Susan 🙂

  2. Happy 4th July to you and your family Sheila! I have so many happy memories of celebrating this day with my kids when we lived in California, going to the beach, having a bbq, letting off fireworks. It’s one the many American traditions I ‘adopted’ when I lived over there, even though I’m British!!!!! Enjoy your ice cream, sounds yummy… 🙂 x

    • Happy 4th to you too, my Mother was born under British rule in Guyana, came to this country as a American soldier’s bride in the second world war. She is a naturalized citizen and is always saying she loves the USA, but talks so much about the queen. She loves the Queen of England, they are the same age, she put a large brim straw hat and I told her there’s the queen, she smiled!

      • This did make me smile! Thanks for sharing about your mother, so interesting. All three of my kids hold duel citizenship, American & British. I tell them what a great gift they have! I hope you all had a lovely day. I also tried to comment on your recent poem about your grief for your nephew just to say I was thinking of you and sending prayers but it wouldn’t come through, no idea why. Hopefully this will…hang in there Sheila!

      • It’s a small world for sure! thanks for comments.

  3. Happy 4th of July. A decent day, then? *smiles with eyebrows raised*
